Across the fields expertise

Basic and applied research at the University relies on specific technical expertise from different departments or interdepartmental centers with specialized equipment acquired through ad hoc large equipment grants from the University or national agencies. These core facilities can also be accessed by external users on a contract basis.

  • A Fermentation Facility for the large-scale production of recombinant proteins in bacteria and yeast
  • Recombinant protein production, purification and characterization with special emphasis on enzymes, especially flavin and metal-containing oxidoreductases, with equipment for anaerobic work, redox titrations and rapid reaction (stopped-flow) kinetics
  • Mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) and microsequencing of proteins and peptides to complete proteomics set-ups in research laboratories
  • A Biocrystallography Unit with a robot-assisted crystal screening set-up and routine access to the European Synchrotron facilities with an in-house diffractometer soon to be acquired

The Interdepartmental Center for Large Instrumentation (CIGA) offers state-of-the art instrumentation for NMR spectroscopy at the medium-to-high field, high-resolution mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance from low mass (500-1000 MW) to high mass (10,000-100,000 MW).

In vitro protein biochemistry studies are complemented by cell biology approaches supported by the Interdepartmental Center for Advanced Microscopy (CIMA) equipped with confocal and electron microscopes, while structural studies can be extended at the single molecule level with equipment available at the Interdepartmental Center for Nanotechnology (CIMAINA).
