Description

The invention relates to a new device for plasma purification to be used in cases of alterations of acid-base equilibrium, such as severe acidosis. In particular, the system is based on a ion-specific dialysis, which is implemented through a combination of several passages prior to reinfusion into the patient's bloodstream. According to the invention, the time for blood re-equilibration in case of severe alterations is reduced to 2-4 hours while in a common dialysis machine, or with available therapeutic approaches, the process takes place in a several hours/days, without, however, obtaining the same results.

Advantages

The advantages offered by the present invention are mainly related to the ion-specificity and to the reduction of time for blood purification in case of critical conditions such as severe acidosis, frequently present in intensive care units. In addition, the invention allows a controlled blood purification, and the new system would theoretically offer cost reduction since there would not be the need for dialysis solutions, as currently employed by traditional devices, in the face of a greater efficacy.

Suggested Applications

The invention can be used in the intensive care unit for the selective purification of specific anions from blood in a short time. In particular, the device can be employed for the treatment of electrolyte disorders and alterations of acid-base equilibrium, with a controlled and selective removal of specific anions from blood in the presence of acidosis.
