Learning objectives
Increase of the knowledge of the operator's safety and ergonomics principles relevant to the mechanization in viticulture;

- assessment of the "winery system" in terms of inputs and wastes energy;

- acquisition of the theoretical and operational methods for the analysis of simple and complex systems of machinery and plants.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course,the student will be able to:

- assess the safety and the ergonomic levels of agricultural machinery used in viticulture;

- organize an efficient chain regarding the machines devoted to carry out the chemical distribution in vineyards;

- characterize the automation and innovation levels of machinery for the grape harvest;

- describe a winery in a systemic approach;

- assess the renewable energy impact for the wine industry;

- organize an automated winery by applying innovative technologies.

Course syllabus
1."Mechanics and mechanization in viticulture" (2,5 CFU):
- Safety in agriculture. A general overview and analysis of critical points: machinery stability on slope operations; PTO shaft and its guard; protection against hot, moving and under pressure parts; access to and exit from the driver's place on self-propelled machinery.
- Tractor roll-over. Accidents actual situation in Italy, EU and worldwide: technical and operator's behaviour critical points and actions and guidelines devoted to their solution; analysis of particular working situations in viticulture.
- Noise emissions. Analysis of the actual situation on self-propelled agricultural machinery and main active and passive devices and guidelines to reduce the operators' exposure; analysis of particular working situations in viticulture.
- Vibrations generation. Analysis of the actual situation on self-propelled agricultural machinery and main active and passive devices and guidelines to reduce the operators' exposure; analysis of particular working situations in viticulture.
- Advanced techniques to increase the efficiency of chemicals distribution, in order to minimize environmental (air and soil) pollution and protecting the operators' and consumers' health. Electrostatic devices, chemical recovery systems, innovative nozzle types. Relationship between the micronization degree of the liquid mixture and extent of coverage, choice of the most correct spraying volume and air speed.
- Analysis of the contamination risk of the operators devoted to the chemical distribution and proper use of the most suitable PPDs.

2. "Advanced Plant for enology" (2,5 CFU):
- The Winery System: Analysis of production factors, the quantification of inputs and outputs. Identification of critical issues.
- Renewable energies in the wine industry: heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, the use of vine pruning, geothermal probes. Description of individual technologies and design criteria. The sustainable winery.
- The absorption refrigeration systems: principles thermodynamic description of the cycle, types, performance.
- The waste from wine making process: rules, characterization, management, plant.
- The automation in the winery: the ring of regulation, the concept of sensor and actuator. Control strategies (proportional, proportional time, etc..). Application examples in the wine-making machinery.
Prerequisites for admission
Both for the parts "Viticulture mechanization" and "Advanced plant engineering for enology", a good knowledge of the main grape cultivation techniques and wine production, with the related machinery and systems used, is required.
Teaching methods
The course is structured on classroom lessons (4 ECTS) and practise activities (1 ECTS), with participation in field and laboratory tests.

Assessement methods and criteria
The exam in only oral, carried out with the course teachers, on wide-ranging topics of both "wine-growing mechanization" and "advanced plant engineering for enology" parts.
