Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the students with knowledge in the field of rural environment resources assessment, rural the land-use planning and landscape design. The course is structured in lectures and practical exercises, during which both methodological tools and operating techniques are provided.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire skills related to the assessment of agricultural and environmental resources, methodologies on rural land-use planning and the related emerging problems, methods and techniques related to landscape design. Furthermore, the student will acquire specific knowledge on the legislation related to land-use and landscape planning, as well as practical experiences.

Teaching unit: Landscape planning
The unit will deal with the following topics:
· approach evolution to rural land-use/landscape planning,
· notes on Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment,
· brief history of Italian legislation on land-use/landscape planning,
· lombardy Region legislation on rural land-use/landscape planning,
· land take and soil sealing,
· analysis and assessment of the characteristics of the rural landscape,
· methods, techniques and technologies for rural land-use/landscape planning,
· Green Infrastructures and Nature Based Solutions,
· italian legislation on public tender.
Moreover, seminars of external experts will be proposed on topics such as, for example:
· the geological component in land-use planning,
· urbanistic aspects in land-use planning,
· participative processes in planning,
· GIS in land-use planning.

Teaching unit: Landscape design
The unit will deal with the following topics:
· concept of landscape and its evolution;
· the site design process: preliminary phases, site analysis, users needs analysis, site potential assessment, conceptual plan and master plan;
· the contents of the project: national legislation;
· design elements: morphology, climate, vegetation, relationship between buildings and open spaces, paths and movement, furnishing elements, water, lighting;
· principles of composition: spaces, forms, vegetation;
· the greenways.
Prerequisites for admission
Preliminary knowledge is not required.
Teaching methods
- Lectures aimed to the acquisition of theoretical knowledge.
- Exercise (in group for attending students, individually for those not attending) aimed to the application of theoretical knowledge and the acquisition of practical skills.
Bibliography
The didactic material will be published on the ARIEL platform and will consist of:
· slide of the lessons,
· technical and scientific articles indicated during the course,
· reference legislation.

Assessement methods and criteria
The exam consists of:
- an oral presentation and discussion, by the different groups, of the maps and schemes produced during the exercise; the time available for the presentation is 1 hour; the evaluation will be carried out taking into account the correctness, completeness and graphic quality of the papers, the capacity of critical reasoning on the study carried out, the quality and effectiveness of the exhibition;
- a written test with 10 questions, both closed and open, on the theoretical topics explained in class; the time available for the test is 2 hours; the evaluation will be carried out taking into account the correctness and completeness of the answers, the organization of the speech and the ability to summarize, as well as the lexical and grammatical correctness.
Non-attending students, who must perform and present the exercise individually, should contact Prof. Rovelli to define the study area and the maps to produce.
