Learning objectives
The course aims to provide basic knowledge of plant cytology useful for understanding the structural organization of higher plants and preparatory to the study of biochemical and physiological processes that determine productivity.

The characteristics of the living organisms. Role of the plant in the biosphere. Energy and metabolism. Autotrophy and heterotrophy. Overview of the plant kingdom. Principles of biological chemistry. Chemical bonds and chemical functional groups. Water and H bond. Structure and functions of biological molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids. The cell theory. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Structure and functions of biological membranes. Cytosol e cytoskeleton. Endomembranes: endoplasmic reticulum and dictyosomes. Ribosomes, microbodies and spherosomes. Mitochondria: structure and functions. The plant cell: genesis, structure and functions of plastids, vacuole and cell wall. Osmosis and cell enlargement Nucleus and chromosomes. Genes and karyotype. Cell division: mitosis.

From genotype to phenotype: the genetic code, DNA transcription and translation. Mutations. Short accounts on recombinant DNA techniques. Plant structure and morphology. Non vascular and vascular plants. Monobiontic and dibiontic life cycles: Algae, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Spermatophyta. Gymnosperms and Angiosperms (monocots and dicots). Types of cells and tissues: meristems and differentiated tissues. Primary structure: morphology and anatomy of roots and stems. Leaves. Secondary structure: vascular and cork cambia, secondary growth in roots and stems. Flower structure. Sexual and asexual reproduction. Embryo and seed development. Seed germination. Fruit structure.

Assessement methods and criteria
Two written tests are planned, concerning respectively I° and II°part of the programme. Each of them consists of 20 closed-ended questions + 4 open-ended questions, which require a detailed discussion of the subject. Every question to answer closed, when corrected, will have a value of 0.5/30, while those to open question will be able to reach a maximum score of 5/30.
