Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the basis of plant genetics for understanding the genetics of crops and biotechnology applied to plant breeding. In addition, aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge on the most important herbaceous field crops grown in Italy. For each species, its world distribution and relevance, main botanical, physiological and agronomic features, and cropping techniques will be treated.The aim of the course is to provide the basis of plant genetics for understanding the genetics of crops and biotechnology applied to plant breeding. For each species, its world distribution and relevance, main botanical, physiological and agronomic features, and cropping techniques will be treated.
In this course the student will acquire the knowledge regarding the fundamental techniques used in plant breeding, from classical plant breeding (e.g. recurrent selection, inbred line extraction, backcrossing, hybrid varieties and mutagenesis ) to modern molecular tools (e. g. marker assisted selection, genetic modified crops). Syllabus
Module I program: Essential of Agricultural Genetics

Quantitative genetics and Population genetics. Chromosome and gene mutations. Plant propagation and genetic structure: allogamy, autogamy and vegetative propagation. Genetic constitution of the main cultures: natural populations, ecotypes, synthetic populations, clones, inbred lines, hybrids. Essential of genetics improvement in plant breeding: hereditability of the characters and selection, recurrent selection, inbred line extraction, backcrossing, hybrid varieties and chemical and physical mutagenesis. The green revolution and its genetic basis. Genetically Modified Plants (GM crops): resistance to pests and herbicides and other examples.

Syllabus
Introduction. The herbaceous field crops in the Italian farming systems: classification. Productivity of herbaceous field crops and prospects of quantitative increase and qualitative improvement of their products. Cereals: wheat, minor species (emmer, barley, triticale), maize sorghum, rice. Grain legumes: soybean and pea. Oil species: sunflower. Tuber plants: potato. Biomass and bio-fuel crops. Forages: classification and agronomic aspects; the major forage families: grasses and legumes; temporary crops; meadows and pastures; forage conservation.
For each species the following topics will be treated:
- importance, origin and distribution,
- botanical features and systematics,
- biological cycle and production determinants,
- pedo-climatic needs,
- variety choice,
- cropping technique,
- biotic and abiotic stresses,
- product quality.
