Il corso si propone di affrontare il tema della registrazione del segnale climatico nella vegetazione arborea nonché le tecniche di indagine basate sull'analisi degli anelli di accrescimento annuale quale strumento per la ricostruzione dei trend di temperatura e precipitazione, dei processi geomorfologici clima dipendenti e delle variazioni ambientali nei diversi ambienti morfoclimatici.
Il corso di propone anche di fornire abilità per utilizzo di tecniche di laboratorio e software specifici per le analisi dendrocronologiche.

Tree rings as indicators of climatic and environmental changes; history of dendrochronology and of dendroclimatology; principles of dendrochronology and tree responses to environmental changes. Influence of environmental factors on tree growth;
Wood tissues: vessels and cel growth, wood density fluctuations. Influence of climate on tree growth; responses of trees to climate change; responses of tree ring to climate changes; intraspecific and interspecific relationships; tree-growth forms.
Materials: sampling techniques and strategies. Measuring methods. Data analysis; growth series, ring-width chronologies, site chronologies; master chronologies; statistical analysis; climatic analysis on single rings, on growth curves and on site chronologies; response functions and reconstructions.
Site chronologies and applied dendroclimatology: dendrochronological reconstruction of geomorphological events related to climate (landslides, avalanches, glacier fluctuations, fluvial changes, etc.); human settlements, climatic trends and glacier mass balance; tree responses in different morphoclimatic environments, stable isotopes in the tree rings. Principles of Dendrochemistry.
Dedicated software, measuring instruments, technical examples.
