Learning objectives
Far conoscere agli studenti il concetto di farmacologia, intesa come lo studio dell'interazione reciproca fra una sostanza introdotta nell'organismo e l'organismo stesso. Questa interazione potrà avere diverse valenze: - essere volta a modificare uno stato patologico (terapia) - danneggiare l'organismo (tossico) - essere utilizzata per studiare l'organismo (farmaco come strumento di studio) Far conoscere agli studenti le applicazioni biotecnologiche in farmacologia. Verranno descritti farmaci biotecnologici, sistemi di delivery basati sulle nanotecnologie e le cellule staminali come farmaco. Verranno, inoltre, presentati il percorso e i successi della terapia genica.

Part 1
What the organism does with drugs: pharmacokinetic:
Absorption, distribution, metabolism ( biotransformation) and elimination.
Factors affecting pharmcokinetics: subject or drug dependence.
Concepts of dose-response, therapeuthic index, qualitative and quantitative
pharmacokinetic.
Mechanisms of drug action: pharmacodynamic. Drug targets and receptors. Drugdrug
interactions.
Pharmacogenomics for individualized therapies.
Exmples of drug treatment for specific diseases
Focus on biological dugs: Monoclonal Antibodies and Soluble receptors

Part 2
The use of nucleic acids as drugs
Ex vivo and in vivo gene therapy
Stem cells as a biological entity
Stem cells as a therapeutic entity
Their isolation, expansion and characterization
The attempts at clinical translation of stem cell biology
The bystander effect
