Learning objectives
This is a third-year, two-semester course (1st semester: 40 hours; 2nd semester: 20 hours) which can only be accessed once the second year English language course has been completed.
The course is aimed at furthering students' knowledge of English with special regard for scientific, technical and professional communication, introducing them to selected content areas (scientific, technical, medical, economic discourse). This will involve developing a clear awareness of the distinctive features of scientific, technical and professional discourse. Students will learn to work with and analyse ESP texts within a discourse analytical framework. They will thus develop the ability to re-produce various forms of communication in the relevant domains (e.g. reports, briefs, abstracts, simplified accounts, presentations, etc.) and mediate them, i.e. translate them orally or in writing, as part of the competences inherent in the language mediator's professional figure.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will have reached C1 level competences in English and will be able to deal with a range of communicative tasks in selected specialized domains (scientific, academic, medical, technological). They will also be able to deal with various tasks in language mediation (orally and in writing).
