Learning objectives
Il corso vuole dare una visione d'insieme dei campi d'interesse della Geochimica e di come essa interagisce con le altre geo-scienze. Verranno proposti aspetti pratici e teorici della geochimica con particolare attenzione ai principi chimici alla base degli studi nelle Scienze della Terra. Il corso è composto da tre moduli: a) principi generali, b) origine ed evoluzione della Terra e del sistema solare attraverso processi che coinvolgono nuclidi e trasformazioni in ambiente di alta temperatura, c) geochimica dell'ambiente di bassa temperatura, caratteristiche delle geosfere esterne e loro reciproche interazioni.

GEOCHEMISTRY
a) Geochemical Fundamentals/Chemistry Review
The Elements: basic principles of inorganic chemistry, periodic properties.
Short accounts on thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions.

b) High temperature geochemistry - Planetary geochemistry
Nucleosynthesis and the origin of the elements: a look the cosmological processes that have created the chemical elements and the sites where these processes occur. The relative abundances of the elements in the universe. The abundances of elements in meteorites. Formation of the Solar System. Formation, structure and composition of the Earth.
Substitution of minor elements in minerals (solid solutions). Geochemical classification of the elements. The geochemical periodic table. Geochemical behaviour of the elements. Goldschmidt's rules. Incompatible and compatible elements. Partition coefficients.
Radiogenic isotope geology and geochronology.

c) Low temperature geochemistry
Chemical reactions at the earth's surface, aqueous solutions.
The atmosphere: structure and composition. Origin and evolution.
The hydrosphere: the hydrological cycle. Composition of seawater and streams. Water-rock interaction.
Stable isotope geochemistry

The course includes some experiences in laboratory.
