The course will provide new concepts related to the pathogenic mechanisms underlying autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiencies and the will develop in the student a critical approach on the different information sources applied to related topics.

Course syllabus
The course explores themes of basic immunology through a tutorial-type teaching activity performed in small groups. Each group of students (3-4 groups, 3-4 students each) deals with a specific topic chosen by the students during the first meeting and develops it into a series of private meetings with a tutor, with the aim to identify and critically discuss information obtained from various sources (scientific literature, texts, database) and to produce a final report that students of each group present and discuss in the classroom to the presence of other groups and tutors in the closing meeting.

The course will discuss:
General notions of murine physiology and murine immune system physiology
Management of murine gene-targeted colonies and experimental planning
Experimental models of inflammatory diseases
Experimental models of autoimmunity
Experimental models of immunodeficiency
General notions of legal aspects related to the use of laboratory animals
The course includes an practical session of necroscopy in the mouse (3-4 groups, 3-4 students each).

Course syllabus
The course is focused on molecular and cellular pathogenic mechanisms underlying the most important systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases. The same mechanisms are also addressed to support the rationale of diagnostic tools as well as for possible therapeutic targets.
The following topics will be covered:
· Systemic lupus erythematosus as prototype of systemic autoimmune diseases
· The spectrum of the autoimmune systemic vasculitis
· Anti-phospholipid syndrome as the most recent autoantibody-mediated vasculopathy
· Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma): a pro-fibrotic immune-mediated-vasculopathy
· Rheumatoid arthritis: a systemic autoimmune disease affecting synovial and bone tissues
· The prototype of the organ-specific autoimmune diseases: autoimmune thyroiditis
