Module 1: What do we study?
Class 01 - Introduction: explaining policy success and failure by special characteristics of the political system.
Class 02 - Starting point: the Eastonian model of policy performance, and the underlying ontology.
Class 03 - When classical causes are not explanations anymore: from government to governance, from hierarchy to networks (and markets).
Class 04 - An alternative framework: governance of policy tools - decision and accountability systems.
Class 05 - Test 1

Module 2: How can we study it?
Class 06 - Causation: how do we grasp it? Generative mechanisms between experiments and case studies - plus a third possibility.
Class 07 - From Mill's canons to QCA: the Joint Method of Agreement and Dfference, the other way round - minimizations.
Class 08 - From causal properties to explanatory conditions - calibration and truth tables.
Class 09 - Necessity and sufficiency with Boolean algebra - parameters of fit.
Class 10 - Model specification, truth table analysis, counterfactuals and their usage.
Class 11 - Test 2

Module 3: How is it actually done?
Class 12 - Defining the model: the efficient causes of corruption
Class 13 - Constructing explanatory conditions, and identifying the scope condition
Class 14 - Model specification
Class 15 - Standard and Enhanced Standard Analysis
Class 16 - Solutions and XY plot

Module 4: Trying it
Class 17 through 20 - presenting and discussing a replication
Course syllabus
Non-attending students are invited to:
1. Start from Mackie's understanding of a causal mechanism
2. Use mechanisms as a lens through which the governance literature can be made sense of
3. Learn from Ragin how to compare systematically and logically across cases so to find Mackie's complexes of causes
4. Apply it all by using the data from
