Pathogenetic bases of diseases

Learning objectives
Through a series of lectures organized in thematic modules the course aims to develop knowledge of the pathogenetic basis of human diseases, with particular attention to limits and benefits of the main experimental models available and their correlation with clinical presentation of the disease. The course also includes seminar sessions held by the students on selected scientific articles aimed at developing the student's ability to critical reading, presentation, and discussion of the scientific data.

Methods and techniques for the generation and analysis of animal models:
Introdution to the course: why and how a course on experimental medicine;
Gene targeting and conditional gene targeting;
In vivo imaging techniques and telemetric evaluation of experimental animals;
Transgenic animals used as human disease models.

Animal models in immunology:
Pathogenetic mechanisms in allergic diseases;
Pathogenetic mechanisms in autoimmune diseases;
Pathogenetic mechanisms in primary immunodeficiencies;
Pathogenetic mechanisms in acquired immunodeficiencies;
Inflammation resolution: molecular mechanisms and experimental models.

Animal models in oncology:
Immunity and cancer: Role of adaptive immunity in cancer;
Infiammation and cancer: intrinsic and extrisic inflammation in cancer promotion;
Infiammation and cancer in experimental models;
Ovary carcinoma: clinical presentation and experimental models;
Experimental models for in vivo visualization of metastasis;
Molecular phenotypes of mammary carcinoma: clinical presentations and experimental models;
The graft versus host disease: experimental models and implications for bone marrow transplant;
Role of the immune response in liver transplant rejection.

Animal models and complex diseases:
From the inflammasome to autoinflammaty syndromes: experimental models and therapeutic approaches;
From pathogen recognition to septic shock: the cytokine cascade in septic shock and experimental models;
Role of soluble pathogen recognition receptors in infectious models;
Avoid, deviate, suppress: immune escape mechanisms in experimental infectious models.

Diseases of cardiovascular system: the crosstalk between haemostasis, immune and inflammatory response, and damage repair:
Thrombosis, thrombogenesis and thrombotic diseases;
Aterosclerosis and arterial thrombosis: coronary heart disease and ischemic cerebrovascular disease;
Venous thromboembolism;
Heart remodeling in systemic hypertension, heart failure, coronary heart disease, and atrial fibrillation;
Seminar: Modeling biologic systems: network based simulation for translational medicine: an application to anticoagulation;
Antithrombotic pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy.

Aging and age-related diseases between genetics, epigenetics and enviromental noxae:
