Basement Geology and Laboratory

A.Y. 2016/2017
Overall hours
Learning objectives

Single session

modulo: Geologia del Cristallino
Course syllabus
Application of multiscale structural analysis to polydeformed rocks in metamorphic and igneous terrains by means of: geometrical analysis at the meso and mega-scale; individuation of a sampling strategy; microstructural analysis. Foliation mechanisms. Rheology of polymineralic and polycristalline aggregates (flow types and flow laws). Deformation mechanisms maps and rheologic envelopes. Deformation, recovery and recrystallisation of the rock forming minerals. Porphyroblast-matrix relationships. Veins, pressure shadows and microboudinage. Kinematic indicators. Coronites. PTdt paths reconstruction. Mantle peridotites microstructures. Intrusive igneous rock meso and megascale geometries. Magmatic and submagmatic deformation at the micro and meso scale. Basaltic microstructures related to CMF. Review of the main microstructural techniques.

Practical work consists of thin section microstructural analysis and application of an integrated analytical approach for the investigation and interpretation of a case history.
