BIOLOGY

DURATION:
Frontal lessons: 5 credits, (40 hrs)
Practise lessons: 1 credit (16 hrs)

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE:
Give to the student the basic knowledge of animal biology, cytology and histology, allowing a structural-morphological approach to the diversity of living beings and introducing to the study of animal anatomy, biochemistry and physiology.

Summary of the course:
Frontal lessons
The nature of science and biology, cellular theory, main features of living beings, prokaryotes and eukariots, the five kingdoms (2 hrs)
Chemical basis of life, protoplasm composition (4 hrs)
Eukaryotic cell, cellular organisation (12 hrs)
Bioenergetics: metabolism and energy, photosynthesis (2 hrs)
The cell cycle, cell division: mitosis, meiosis and sexual reproduction (4 hrs)
DNA, replication, mutations, heredity and evolution, (2 ore)
From gene to protein: gene expression and its regulation (2 ore)
Animal Histology: Epithelial tissues, Connective tissues, Cartilage and bone, Muscle tissues, Nervous tissue (12 hrs)

Practise lessons
Seminars on the fields of molecular and biological techniques applied to the animal reproduction (6 hrs)
Laboratory: cell culture techniques, methods in morphological and molecular analysis (10 ore)

Examination:
The exam is based on an oral test at the end of the course for the final evaluation of the student preparation.
