Course objective
The course objective is teaching the fundamentals of polymer science. Both lectures and laboratory experiments will focus on some of the key synthetic methods for making polymers and the characterization techniques for determining their molecular weights and structural properties.

Course content
Introduction to the fundamental concepts in polymer chemistry: definition of monomer, polymer, oligomer, molecular weight distribution and molecular weight averages, homopolymer and copolymer, glass transition temperature, melting point. Synthesis of polymers: radical, step-wise, co-ordinate mechanism, with emphasis on the process parameters affecting the molecular weight dependence. Solution properties: viscometry, SEC chromatography and light scattering for molecular weight analysis. MALDI-TOF analysis. Crystalline and amorphous state of polymer materials. Introduction to thermal properties of polymers.
Laboratory experiments: step-wise polymerization (synthesis of polyesters), radical polymerization (synthesis of polystyrene). Analysis of the molecular weights of polymers by SEC chromatography with on-line LLALS detectors. Spectroscopic characterization by FT-IR analysis and 1H NMR and 13C NMR.

Recommended reading
-"Textbook of Polymer Science" Fred W. Billmeyer, Wiley 3rd edition.
- Lecture notes and handout for each laboratory experiment are available on ARIEL platform.

Prerequisite
Knowledge of basic organic chemistry.

Assessment method
Theoretical section: written test with open questions on general course subjects. The assessment of the laboratory section is based on written reports and on the evaluation of the general laboratory performance, in terms of care for the security regulations, ability to tackle the proposed problems, critical judgment of the errors and mistakes.
