Fornire agli studenti conoscenze di base riguardo ai processi di formazione di giacimenti di minerali e metalli utili in stretta relazione ai diversi contesti geologici, e riguardo alle strategie utilizzate nella prospezione mineraria per il ritrovamento di nuove risorse minerarie oppure in campo minerario per lo sfruttamento ottimale delle risorse.

ORE GEOLOGY AND MINERAL PROSPECTING
The course aims to cover a broad spectrum of ore deposit types, to link them strictly to geological processes s.l. at various scales and eventually to illustrate strategies for exploration and evaluation/beneficiation of said ore deposits.
List of the topics:
General part - Definition of "ore deposit"; types, geometry and textures; assemblages of useful minerals and metals; main "motors" of ore genesis: water s.l., magmas, tectonics, etc.; role of fluids, and mechanisms of mineral precipitation. Classification schemes.
Ore deposits - main geological models of ore genesis and their relationships with the evolution of the Earth's crust and the different geodynamic settings: (a) Ore deposition in convergent and collisional settings (deposits related to arc and orogenic magmatism, tectonics and hydrothermal activity: porphyry, hypo-epithermal vein-type deposits skarn, greisen, etc.; deposits related to metamorphism and deformation, etc).; (b) Ore deposition in extensional settings and related to magmatism, tectonics, hydrothermal activity, sedimentation, etc. at variuos stages of crustal rifting: deposits related to formation of oceanic crust, back-arc rifting-related massive sulphide deposits; deposits related to anorogenic magmatism (mafic-ultramafic magmatism, layered complexes, peralkaline magmatism, ); deposits related to basin sedimentation and/or submarine exhalative activity and to tectonics. (c) Mineral deposits related to interaction between diagenesis and orogens. (d) Mineral deposits related to surficial processes (weathering, alluvial-clastic sedimentation, etc.).
While going through the different types of ore deposits, the effort will be done to highlight those features of the mineralization and its context which are most useful or significant both for exploration and for valorization/beneficiation purposes.
Outline of economy of ore deposits and of technical and economic evaluation of separation processes (comminution, concentration, liberation, efficiency factor).
