Learning objectives
The course focus on the relationship between applied biotechnology and animal welfare in farm, laboratory and companion animals. Oxidatively generated stress, related causes and the relationship between oxidative status and farming systems are discussed. Biomarkers of oxidative stress applied to the evaluation of animal health status are considered.

Lecture
Molecular markers and their properties and experimental designs (2 hours).
Technologies and tools in relation to experimental designs and their application in parentage control, genetic tests and genomic selection (2 hours).
Principles of Bioinformatics. On-line data banks for markers and genes. Browsing of online data bank, extraction of information and their usage (2 hours)

Course syllabus
The main topic of the course concerns the introduction to fundamental bases of oxidative stress cell exposure and application of biomarkers based assays able to verify in vivo oxidative damage and anti-oxidant capacity. Mostly, the course examines the development of reactive intermediates which can covalently bind to DNA, resulting in bulky addition products called "adducts." DNA.

Causes and occurrence of oxidative stress damage (2 hours).
Evaluation of total anti-oxidant capacity and repairing mechanisms (2 hours).
Development of DNA adducts and assessment of oxidized bases in cellular DNA (2 hours).
Identification of valid and reliable biomarkers in monitoring oxidative status in biological systems (3 hours).

Microsatellites analysis: separation on sequencer, profile analysis using dedicated software and interpretation of the results. Sequence analysis: separation on sequencer, traces analysis using dedicated software and interpretation of the results.
SNPs analysis: detection and data analysis by specific software.
