Learning objectives
The program aims to analyze a few typical cellular and molecular mechanisms at the basis of various physiological functions, for example such as those that control respiration, cardiac and skeletal muscle functions and gastrointestinal processing and absorption of food.

Course syllabus
The respiratory system: basic concepts; role and mechanism of action of the surfactant, role of 'Hypoxia Inducible Factor; adaptive responses to extreme conditions; nervous and humoral regulation of breathing; the Hering Breuer reflex.
Control of blood pH: general concepts, role of chemical buffers, respiration and kidney.
Physiology of the skeletal muscle: excitation-contraction coupling
Exercise physiology, modulators of muscle mass, muscle fatigue. Cellular and molecular adaptations to aerobic and resistance training; cellular and molecular alterations caused by doping.
Training-induced cardiac remodelling; molecular mechanism underlying congenital cardiac diseases such as channelopathies; development of biological pacemakers
Food processing, digestion and absorption.

Teaching material will be distributed in the class as necessary and will include relevant published articles and/or chapters from the following textbook:

Prerequisites and examination procedures
Knowledge of basic principles of physiology
The exam consists in
A written test on various arguments covered during classes and eventually of an oral test when the result of the written test is not sufficient to determine the level of knowledge reached by the student.
