Learning objectives
The course is intended for students without any previous knowledge of the Chinese language and with the goal of equipping them with the basis for education in standard Chinese language (Putonghua), both spoken and written, for day-to-day use. At the beginning, the learning of phonetics and the writing of characters will be emphasized, after which the first elementary notions of grammar and syntax will follow.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of 120 hours of classroom instruction the students will be able to read and translate the textbook and hold everyday conversations, including introducing themselves, family, and friends, greetings and farewells, speaking about the weather and the seasons, describing the place where they live, presenting their course of study, going shopping, etc. They will be able to recognize and write 400 characters and form more than 400 words.
