Learning objectives
The Biology and Chemistry modules, which are in the first semester of the first year and are preparatory to the General Biochemistry module of the second semester. In particular, the Chemistry module will focus on general and organic chemistry notions that are required to understand life processes at a cellular level.
At the same time, in the Biology module, the basic characteristics of the alive matter will be discussed, with a particular focus on the biological mechanisms that regulate the functional center of the organisms, the cell. Moreover, the Biology course will cover also on the composition, structure, and function of cellular organelles, with a particular focus on the subcellular elements that characterize the motility of the muscle cell. Finally, mechanisms of duplication and genetic expression, as well as the biological/reproductive cycles of alive organisms will be covered.
The General Biochemistry module will give basic notions on protein structure and functions, lipids and carbohydrates, as well as enzymatic catalysis, cellular energetic processes, and the main metabolic pathways.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will possess enough knowledge to understand the biological processes that occur at the cellular level, with particular attention to the chemical and biochemical events that determine life. In particular, the student will be able to understand the matter composition at a sub-cellular level. These notions are fundamental premises to understand how the structure of the cellular elements determines their function. Moreover, the student will know the main compounds involved in cellular metabolism, their reactions and regulations, as well as the main biological mechanisms that regulate the cycles of alive organisms.
