The aim of the course is to provide high-level profiles for animal technicians in livestock production and professional skills to deal with the request of animal husbandry of the main farmed ruminants and monogastric species.

Lectures
Agricultural sustainability of breeding and farming systems (2 hours)
Livestock production systems of dairy cows and beef cattle and their significance in the Common Agricultural Policy (2 hours)
Organic farming for milk and meat production of ruminant species (3 hours)
Ruminant livestock production in terms food safety and traceability, food quality and ethical concerns (6 hours).
Traceability issues in bovine meat quality systems (3 hours)
Practice
Technical visit to dairy and beef cattle farms (12 hours)

- pig production in the European Union and in the world in relation to the main emerging issues and public concerns (2 hours)
- housing and management of the boar and semen extension and packaging methods on farm (3 hours)
- management of farrowing and lactation (3 hours)
- towards adopting non-cage system for farrowing (1 hours)
- management practices for group housing sows (2 hours)
- space requirement and space availability (1 hour)
- current animal welfare issues and future EU perspectives: alternative to castration and tail docking (4 hours)

Practice
- case study: group housing (4 ore)
- case study: non-cage farrowing system (4 ore)
- case study: manipulable materials (2 ore)
- exercise on animal welfare assessment with pictures and video demonstration (6 hours)
