The Master's programme is designed for those who intend to use advanced bioinformatics approaches in computational, statistical and mathematical sciences to address complex biological questions. More specifically, the programme aims to provide learners with conceptual tools related to theoretical and instrumental breakthroughs in molecular biology, with particular regard to: sequencing techniques and technologies aimed at analysing, understanding and systemizing omics data; mathematical, statistical and computer tools for raw data processing, analysis and interpretation, both in a numerical and a biological sense. The programme also aims to develop critical awareness for effective representation of data to be used across the board, through software packages and web services, as well as ethical and legal awareness in handling, processing and sharing biological data.
The programme will be held in English.

The programme will be held at the National Institute of Molecular Genetics (INGM), Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Pavilion, via F. Sforza 35, 20122 Milan, from 13 March 2020 to 29 January 2021.
The programme includes frontal teaching and other training activities, such as computational tools, data analysis and applications, for a total of 512 hours. Frontal lectures are structured as follows:
From molecular biology to functional genomics: molecular basis of genetic diseases; genomic structure; immunogenetics and biochemistry of genetic traits.
Structural biology: introduction to protein modelling. Computational aspects of protein modelling and analysis. Computational techniques for protein dynamics analysis, molecular modelling and drug design.
Basic computer science: introduction to computer science and concepts of system, network and service architectures. Computer programming.
Algorithms and data organization in bioinformatics analysis: introduction to algorithms and simple and complex data structures. Graphs: concepts, algorithms and implementation.
Biological analysis database: introduction to the concepts of relational databases, SQL, and Open Source database management systems.
Next Generation Sequencing: basic and advanced sequencing technologies; single-cell sequencing; DNA, RNA, ChIP, ATAC-Seq. Theoretical introduction to the most used and advanced data analysis algorithms.
Computational biology: introduction to Big Data analysis and to statistical methods used to identify differentially expressed genes, algorithms, clustering and gene enrichment analysis.
Statistical analysis of omics data: introduction to statistics. Probability and stochastic processes, regression methods, multivariate analysis. Probabilistic algorithms. Graphs and networks. Machine learning and dimensionality reduction. Applications in the field of personalized and precision medicine.
Legal and ethical aspects of science and technology.
An internship period of 350 hours will follow.
During the programme, students will be tested for their knowledge and skills through a written and / or practical exam.
The final exam consists of the presentation of a poster on the research project findings, as well as a brief oral presentation with questions from the Commission.
Students are not awarded marks for exams, but a pass or fail; in the case of a fail outcome, the exam must be repeated.
The Master's qualification is worth 60 university credits (CFU).

Enrolment fee
Those admitted to the programme shall pay an enrolment fee of € 4,000.00 (including insurance coverage).
The enrolment fee must be paid in two instalments:
· First instalment, amounting to € 1,516.00, to be paid by the matriculation date;
· Second and final instalment, amounting to € 2,500.00, to be paid by 31 July 2020.
The first instalment includes stamp duty.

Possono inoltre presentare domanda di ammissione anche i laureandi nelle medesime discipline purché conseguano il diploma di laurea entro la data di inizio del corso e comunque non oltre tre mesi dalla data di avvio dello stesso. In tal caso, la partecipazione al corso verrà disposta "con riserva" e il candidato sarà tenuto ad autocertificare, a pena di decadenza, il possesso della laurea entro trenta giorni dalla data di conseguimento.

La selezione per l'ammissione al corso avverrà attraverso un colloquio, nonché sulla base della valutazione del curriculum vitae et studiorum. Il colloquio è volto a verificare le conoscenze delle materie oggetto del master, in particolare le competenze in ambito (bio)-informatico e consisterà, inoltre, nella discussione di uno o più articoli scientifici recenti.
Al completamento del master saranno acquisite nozioni di carattere tecnico di alto livello nell'ambito della bioinformatica, della ricerca di base e industriale, abilità analitiche tipiche delle Data Science e progettuali. Tali caratteristiche possono essere applicate in differenti settori quali l'accademia, la clinica, l'industria biotecnologica e farmaceutica. Vista la sempre crescente richiesta, sia nazionale che internazionale, di bioinformatici professionisti e vista la mancanza di corsi universitari adeguati, il master Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics si posiziona come strumento catalizzatore per l'avanzamento professionale.
