Learning objectives
Structure, preparation, properties and applications of important inorganic materials. Basic laboratory techniques for the synthesis and the characterisation of inorganic materials.
At the end of the course the student will be able to handle the most common inorganic materials and find the most suitable analytical technique for solve qualitative and quantitative characterization.

Syllabus
Course contents

Clays and related materials: structures and applications. Refractories. Oxides: preparation methodologies, characterisation and applications. Three way catalysts. Glasses and enamels. Diamonds, graphite and active carbons. Characterisation and surface functionalization.
Laboratory
Basic techniques of oxide preparation. Bulk and surface characterisation. Metal nanoparticles with different characteristics and their characterisation.

Assessment method
Oral examination based on a ppt presentation on a selected topic
Group discussion on the lab experiences where the students will present the obtained results highlighting strength and weakness of their lab tests.
