The course aims to introduce students to the basic quantitative techniques for social research. They will learn about the different types of variables and about the ways for combining them; they will understand why sampling is used and how to perform bivariate and multivariate analyses based on such samples. They will go through the main statistical techniques such as ANOVA, crosstabs, bivariate and multivariate regression. They will also deepen their knowledge about the measurement of complex concepts, about how to create indexes and about reliability and validity tests. Students will also receive a basic training of the statistical software SPSS which will be used to develop a small, but original, research product.
