ATTENDING STUDENTS
Syllabus
Students can find below a tentative period-by-period schedule for the course module. The final schedule will be made available on the final module handbook in Ariel (University of Milan online learning management system) few weeks before the start of lectures.

Week 1-2: Introduction to Strategy and Strategic Analysis
This first two weeks will involve an introduction to the module. The delivery of lectures, reading and learning requirements and assessment details will be explained. We will also explore the nature of strategy and strategic decision-making at a variety of levels, including the vocabulary of strategy and strategic choices. We will explore the development of strategy in different contexts, including small businesses, corporations, non-for profit sectors and different schools of strategic thought.

Week 3 - 4 Strategic Position
In weeks 3 and 4 we will focus on industry analysis. Students will learn how to identify primary drivers of competition: Porter five forces model will be critically evaluated and implemented. We will then cover the analysis of how companies can achieve and sustain their competitive advantage. We will focus on how resources and internal activities drive consumers' willingness to pay and firm's sources of costs. This part will cover strategic capabilities, value chain, value network, market space and related topics.

Week 5-6 Strategic Choices
In week 5 and 6 the module will focus on corporate level strategy, business level strategy and directions of development. Under corporate level strategy, we will explore issues such as portfolio management, corporate diversification and corporate control. The section on business level strategy will investigate the positioning of businesses, generic strategies and techniques of evaluation. In the directions of development section, we will investigate options for company development, such as mergers and acquisitions and strategic alliances.

Week 7-8 Advanced topics in Strategy
Weeks 7 and 8 will focus with novel topics in strategic management. We will examine the decision to innovate and how to effectively manage IPRs. We will also cover the increasing relevant topic of how companies can develop new strategies in the digital era (big data, AI, industry 4.0). Finally, we will try to understand how the standard strategic framework changes in response to the sustainable objectives of a company

Week 9-10 Wrap-up and presentations
The last two weeks will provide a summary of the core topics covered during the module as well information on the final examination. The students will have the opportunity to present their coursework and will be provided feedback to improve their final submission.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
Syllabus
Non-attending students are expected to cover the topics contained in the final schedule which will be made available in the module handbook in Ariel (University of Milan online learning management system) few weeks before the start of lectures. As non-attending students cannot benefit from the time in class, they are expected to deepen their understanding of the topics by relying on the non-compulsory material (in addition to the compulsory material). Please find below a tentative schedule covering the main topics for non-attending students.
