Qualitative comparative analysis (Module 2)
The course introduces QCA as a theory-driven strategy for probing and refining the association of configurations of necessary and sufficient conditions to the occurrence of special outcomes at the case level. Configurations will be presented as a complement to explanations by single determinants as well as by causal chains. Students will learn the set-theoretic rendering of necessity and sufficiency, and how causation can be ascribed in observational studies on the basis of modal and counterfactual comparisons that emphasize invariance to pinpoint equifinal minimal solutions and valid at the case level.
