Obiettivi formativi
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a confident knowledge of main issues of Contemporary History, focusing on the most important features of the socio-political, economical and institutional development of European and World scenery, between the age of nationalisms and the fall of Berlin Wall. We will focus on 20th Century and, since this century was also the age of mass communication, we will use mass media to study it.

For all three units is required a confident knowledge of main issues of Contemporary History.
Propedeuticità
Basic knowledge of the main socio-economical and political-institutional events, with particular regard to the European context, between the end of the XIX Century and the end of the Cold War.
Prerequisiti e modalità di esame
Basic notions Contemporary History are necessary.
At the end of the course, a confident knowledge of main historical events and the ability to locate crucial phases of Contemporary History are required.
The exam will be oral and it will focus both on the books recommended and (for attending students) on the subjects discussed during the class.

Programma
The first part of the course will focus on the crucial issue of political, social and cultural consequences generated by the industrial revolution, the development of nationalisms and the colonial expansion, till the end of the First World War.

Programma
The second unit aims to analyze the dramatic consequences of World War I, facing with particular regard the genesis and the first phase of development of totalitarianisms, paying attention to the causes and the effects of 1929 Great Depression, the break of World War II and its consequences.

Unità didattica 3
Programma
The last part of the course will deal with the redefinition of the International balances generated by the outcome of the Second World War. The attention will be focused on the genesis of Cold War and the analysis of the complex events, of political and strategic nature, that led to the division of the world. Particular regard will be given to the decolonization and to the appearance, on the international scenery, of new geopolitical subjects and nonaligned countries.
