In the first module, after introducing the concept of politics and some methodological issues related to science, some key concepts for political science are discussed, such as power, state, liberalism, democracy and dictatorship.

Programma
In the second module, an overview of the main theories and their empirical implications about political regimes is put forward. The determinants of democracy and dictatorship and regime transitions, the differences between the two political regimes, the varieties of democracy and dictatorship, and their consequences in terms of economic outcomes are analyzed in depth.

Programma
The third module is devoted to the comparative study of contemporary democracies and their institutions. This part of the course tackles the study of different forms of government and types of electoral systems, analyzing their political consequences; the origins of different kind of parties and party systems; the analysis of public bureaucracies and of public policies. An overview of the major theories about collective decision making and its problems is introduced at the beginning of the module.
