The aim of the course is to provide the students with a broad understanding of the main issues of Contemporary History, focusing on the most important events that have marked the history of the World between the second half of the Nineteenth century and the end of the Cold War.

Informazioni sul programma
All three units require a confident knowledge of the main issues of Contemporary History.
Propedeuticità
Basic knowledge of the main socio-economical and political-institutional events, with particular emphasis on the European context, between the end of the XIX Century and the end of the Cold War.
Prerequisiti e modalità di esame
Basic notions of Contemporary History are recommended.
At the end of the course, a confident knowledge of the main historical events and the ability to locate crucial phases of Contemporary History are required.
The exam will be oral and it will focus on the books indicated in this program, on books suggested during the lessons and (for attending students) on the notions discussed in class.

Programma
The first part of the course will focus on the political, social and cultural issues of the late Nineteenth century in Europe and in the World, on the development of nationalisms, on the colonial expansion, and on the main causes of the First World War.

Programma
The second unit analyzes the dramatic consequences of World War I, the genesis and the first phase of the development of totalitarianisms and the break out of World War II.

Unità didattica 3
Programma
The last part of the course will focus on the Cold War until the end of the USSR in 1991. In addition, the course will deal with the definition of "civilization" as expressed by historians during the Twentieth century. The attention will be directed to the use of the concept of civilizations to better understand the events of the world from the First World War to the Cold War.
