Course Objectives

Graduates in Prevention Techniques and Safety Procedures in the Environment and Workplace are healthcare professionals responsible, within their area of competence, for all preventive, evaluative and monitoring procedures relating to environmental health and safety in living and working environments, food and drink hygiene, and public and veterinary hygiene and health.

Assuming inspective and surveillance duties, Prevention Techniques and Safety Procedures in the Environment and Workplace graduates, within the limits of their functions, constitute officers of the Criminal Investigation Department.

They carry out investigative procedures geared at the issue of technical and health certificates of no impediment and authorisations for activities subject to monitoring. Within their professional sphere, they investigate, identify, challenge and give notice of any irregularities identified and deliver opinions within their competence. They:

  • monitor and control living and working environments and evaluate the need to carry out inquiries and investigations in relation to accidents and occupational diseases
  • monitor and verify that structures and related working environments meet the safety conditions required for the facilities
  • monitor and check the quality of foods and drinks for consumption and evaluate the need to carry out further specialist inspections
  • monitor and assess veterinary health and hygiene standards within their sphere of competence, and evaluate the need to carry out further inspections
  • monitor and check cosmetic products
  • work with the judiciary administration on inquiries into offences against the environmental heritage and health and safety conditions in working environments and in connection with foods
  • monitor and test all other areas provided for in the laws and regulations relating to preventive health care and environmental protection within their sphere of competence.

They provide professional services with full autonomy and collaborate with other professional figures in the planning and organisation of work in the facility in which they operate. They are responsible for overseeing the planning, execution and quality standards of their own professional work.

They partake in research, educational and professional consulting activities in the health services and any other sphere that requires their professional competence; contribute to the training of staff and directly assist with the continuous updating of their professional profile and research.

Career and Employment

Subject to successful completion of all requisite competition procedures, graduates can assume roles charged with prevention, inspection and surveillance-related responsibilities, with public authorities (Hospitals, Local Health Authorities, Regional Agency for Environmental Protection and Prevention (ARPA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Prevention (ISPESL), Local Authorities, etc., and in services relating to control and prevention, staff training and prevention and protection.

Within private facilities, either as employees or consultants, graduates can undertake fully autonomous professional duties relating to the organisation and planning of work in connection with health and safety conditions for workers.

In collaboration with the prevention and protection service, they assist in the establishment of procedures geared at guaranteeing the safety of workers and environmental protection. They also collaborate with company risk analysis firms and assist with the drafting of risk evaluation documents (for occupational, food and environmental safety).

They carry out environmental surveys to monitor the health conditions of living and working environments.
