Course Objectives

The course provides graduates with an advanced grounding in scientific methodology, and the competences required to coordinate national and international study and research projects in full compliance with ethical and bioethical regulations and concerns.

In particular, the curriculum offers in-depth training in the scientific, technical and productive programming and development of biotechnologies employed in the field of human health.

Particular attention is paid to the design and planning of innovative biopharmaceuticals and the study of their cellular and molecular mechanisms; company organisation and management; company creation; the management of innovative projects and marketing activities (including the patenting of innovative products) for biotechnological pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, both in terms of correct scientific communication and the appropriate management of public and private economic resources.

Career and Employment

Graduates from the master degree programme in Drug Biotechnology possess advanced skills in the development of scientific methodologies, the capacity to coordinate national and international research projects, and specialist knowledge in relation to biotechnologies employed in the fields of pharmaceutical biotechnology.

Graduates can pursue careers in the following areas:

  • teaching and research in public and private universities
  • scientific research and technological development in public bodies (the National Health Institute, the National Research Council, the Italian Medicines Agency, the national Environment Agency, research institutes, etc.)
  • scientific research and development in the biotechnological, pharmaceutical, diagnostic and cosmetic industries
  • scientific research and technological development in the food industry and food processing
  • scientific research and technological development in public and private facilities engaged in pre-clinical activities in the biomedical field
  • science teaching in secondary education institutes
  • clinical monitoring activities
  • technical and scientific information
  • the management of quality control
  • the regulation, management and creation of biotechnological corporations in the public and private spheres.

Graduates can enter managerial and consulting roles in the following fields:

  • therapeutic activities, with a particular focus on the development and trial of innovative products with therapeutic capacities in relation to human and animal pathologies
  • the production and design of patents in the health sector
  • formulation processes relating to the preparation of advanced pharmaceutical forms, vectors and cells for the administration of new therapeutic products
  • diagnostic processes, through the management of molecular analysis technologies and cellular biotechnologies employed in the biomedical, pharmacological, toxicological, cosmetological and environmental fields
  • biomedical trials, with particular reference to the use of in vivo and in vitro models to analyse the action mechanisms of new medicines
  • the design and development of biotechnologies with clinical and therapeutic purposes in a multidisciplinary context
  • technical and scientific pharmaceutical information
  • the evaluation and control of environmental safety.
