Course Objectives

 The degree programme provides students with a sound knowledge of biological systems from a molecular and cellular perspective. Graduates possess solid knowledge and a good experimental basis in the key multidisciplinary techniques employed in biotechnology for the production of goods and services through the use of biological systems. They are familiar with scientific methodology and able to apply it in concrete situations, and possess a good understanding of the related ethical and bio-ethical issues and regulations.

Graduates possess competences in the following fields:

  • Plant production: knowledge of the morphology and biology of the principal cultivated plants; the use of biotechnologies in the propagation, cultivation, protection and genetic improvement of agricultural crops; plant propagation; and the selection of cultivations on the basis of the related environmental context. In particular: plants resistant to biotic and abiotic stress; plants that require lower levels of chemical treatment and are therefore more environmentally-friendly; plants compatible with production-improving symbionts; the selection of plants for improved nutritional quality in food products; the selection of plants to improve the quality of products intended for ‘non-food’ uses;
  • Diagnostics: the application of phytopathological diagnostic and varietal certification techniques;
  • The production of molecules with high added-value: the development of techniques for natural cellular cultivations intended for the production of molecules with practical uses; the selection of micro-organisms which can be used for food;
  • Environmental conservation and improvement; the development of plant and microbial organisms for the removal of pollutants and the monitoring of environmental quality; 
  • Organism selection: for use in biological control and the control of vector insects with sanitary uses.

Career and Employment

 Graduates can pursue careers in:

  • Public and private research bodies (the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR), the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAF), and the Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment, etc.) that deal with innovative and environmentally-friendly crops with specific characteristics;
  • The Regional Environmental Protection Agency and private analysis laboratories for the detection of GMOs in food supply chains and the environment; Plant variety certification centres;
  • Industrial sectors for the production of plants with food uses and non-food uses (nursery gardening);
  • Organic fertiliser and plant symbiont inoculant bacteria production sectors;
  • Sectors related to the production of high-value molecules of plant origin (proteins, vitamins, medicines) and plant protection products;
  • Public and private agencies and inspectors of plant health control and plant protection;
  • The depollution, environmental conservation and improvement sectors; international cooperation.
