Learning objectives
The workshop aims to provide students with the theoretical and methodological knowledge to analyze-with a sociological approach-the history and evolution of anti-mafia movements, examining their historical and political context, actors, forms of mobilization and media salience.
The main stages of the activation of citizenship against mafia-style organized crime will be illustrated and discussed, outlining points of convergence and distance between the different case studies examined.
At the end of the workshop, students will be equipped with analytical tools useful for reading current anti-mafia mobilizations and the connection with other issues of citizenship activation. Finally, there will be a specific focus on the use of digital technologies as a mode of civic engagement and the role of women in the movements examined.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop, students will possess analytical tools useful for reading current anti-mafia mobilizations and linking them to other issues of activating citizenship, in a national and European context. They will also be able to analyze the impact of digital technologies as a mode of civic engagement in contemporary forms of mobilization. Adequate communication skills will be acquired and the student will be able to discuss and argue their own opinions and theses, in relation to the subject matter of the workshop, from literature and empirical observation.

Course syllabus
The workshop aims to provide students with tools and concepts for analyzing the history and sociology of anti-mafia movements over the past century.
The two directions through which the movements will be examined will be time and space.
In relation to the variable of time, the evolution of the movements from the early twentieth century to the present will be seen, distributing the analysis in five macro-periods: from the Sicilian fasces to the post-World War II period; the 1960s-70s; the Palermo Spring of the 1980s; the post-stragi years; and the 2000s.
In relation to the space variable, the evolution of the movements will be seen in terms of how they have spread and evolved territorially, starting with their presence in Sicily, broadening the gaze to other southern regions (Calabria and Campania first and foremost), reaching northern Italian regions and European projections (mainly France and Germany).
Through a review of the literature, the major defining elements of these movements will be examined through historical, sociological and political perspectives.
A specific focus will be about the role of women in these movements.
