In recent years, research centers and companies are paying increasing attention to the development of more economically and environmentally sustainable chemical processes. While global climate change calls for the development of more efficient and greener manufacturing processes, pressure on pharmaceutical and fine chemical production is increasing due to rising quality standards, time constraints, and need for cost effectiveness. Therefore, novel approaches are required to improve the sustainability of the current synthetic practices and to avoid or reduce the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design of chemical products or processes.
The course will be divided in different sessions and will present and discuss innovative enabling technologies, such as flow chemistry and catalysis (e.g., biocatalysis, photocatalysis), for the obtainment of high value chemicals, i.e., active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) or their intermediates.
The objective of the course is to introduce students to emerging enabling technologies to overcome today's synthetic challenges, making the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors greener and safer.
