Animal nutrition and feeding

A.Y. 2020/2021
Overall hours
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the knowledge of nutrition, intended as a description of the different nutritional principles and the study of their use in the animal organism, and the knowledge of feeding, intended as the characterization of the different animal feeds, of the main nutritional needs of the animal species used in livestock production, and basic criteria for diet formulation and evaluation.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire competences on nutrition and feeding of the main species for livestock production, and will acquire skills for diet formulation adapted to the needs of the professional activity in support to the livestock company, and also in preparation of the master's in-depth studies.
Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Lesson period
Second semester
The lectures will be held synchronously using the Microsoft Teams platform according to the course timetable.
The exercises will be carried out in part synchronously using the Microsoft Teams platform, partly in presence in the classroom or in the didactic laboratory appropriately equipped for the Covid emergency. In this regard, students will be appropriately informed through notices on the Ariel website.
Technical visits to farms will be carried out only if the conditions of the health emergency allow it.

The program and the reference material of the lectures will not change.
The supporting didactic material will be made available through the Ariel platform.

The exam will take place orally using the Microsoft Teams or Skype platform if the Covid-19 emergency does not allow it to be held in person.
Course syllabus
- Chemical constituents of feeds and related chemical analyses.
- Mineral and vitamin nutrition.
- Livestock feeds (forages, concentrates, supplements, additives and enzymes) with fundamental analytical and nutritional characteristics and main methods of use in the diets.
- Digestion and absorption in the different livestock species: ruminants, herbivorous monogastrics and non-herbivorous monogastrics.
- Fibre: dietetic and nutritional function for ruminants and monogastrics.
- Factors regulating feed intake.
- Energy and material metabolism. Catabolism and anabolism.
- Basics of biological analysis of feeds and determination of in vivo, in vitro, in situ digestibility and rumen fermentability. Potential and effective nitrogen and fibre rumen degradability.
- The energy and protein value of feeds.
- Nutritional requirements of dairy and beef cattle, small ruminants, buffaloes, horses, pigs, rabbits and poultry, at different stages of growth and physiology.
- Examples of rationing for dairy and beef cattle, for pigs and poultry.
Training and other activities
The exercises will include: laboratory tests for chemical and biological analysis of animal feeds; computer exercises for the formulation of the diets; visits to various livestock companies for the verification in the field of the theoretical notions acquired during the course.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of domestic animals is required.
Teaching methods
The teacher will use lectures, classroom exercises, laboratory classes and technical visits to farms.
