The topics covered by the lectures will be:
· Optical Imaging
o Introduction to optical microscopy: bright-field, dark-field, phase contrast,
autofluorescence /fluorescence
o Imaging techniques with fluorescent probes: confocal microscopy, FRAP, FRET, STED,
TIRF, two-photon excitation microscopy
· Electron microscopy & spectromicroscopy
o Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX),
Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS)
o Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS)
· Scanning probe microscopy
o Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM)
o Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)
· Application of bio-imaging
o Lab-on-chip and Cell-on-chip systems
The course includes 16 hours of laboratory in which the students will experience: confocal
microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, design of a lab on chip device.
