Obiettivi formativi
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a broad understanding of the main issues of Contemporary History. At the end of the course, students should be able to provide an explanation of long-term and large-scale historical developments, assess the importance of turning points in world history, identify and describe political choices and their cultural, economic, social and diplomatic background.

Informazioni sul programma
Students who attend the classes should combine the notions discussed during classes and the study of the book according to this programme.
Prerequisiti
It is expected that students have a basic knowledge of both the main events in world history in the last two centuries and contemporary global politics. Students who will attend the classes will have the possibility to take an intermediate written examination on the first part of the course and to complete the exam with an oral examination on the rest of the programme.
Unità didattica 1
Programma
The first part of the course will analyse selected events and processes that characterized the late Nineteenth century in Europe and in the world and examine in depth the early Twentieth century. The second part of the course will investigate the genesis and the development of totalitarian regimes in the inter-war period. The third part of the course will focus on international post-war order and on the Cold War until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Antony Best, Jussi Hanhimäki, Joseph A. Maiolo, Kirsten E. Schulze, International History of the Twentieth Century and Beyond, Routledge (Second Edition 2008 or Third Edition 2015). Additional materials will be suggested to the students during classes.
Prerequisiti
