Presentazione del corso
This course will summarise the main developments in cultural and intellectual history by focusing on the history of Italy across the centuries. It will do so by intertwining three levels:
1) the role of intellectuals and the canon of 'high culture', such as literature and ideas, music and drama, painting, sculpture and architecture;
2) the production and consumption of popular culture: journalism and entertainment, sport and tourism;
3) the customs, beliefs and practices of communities: rituals of religion and rites of passage.
The first lectures will focus on methodological questions. These will be later applied to the intellectual and cultural history of Italy, considered as a country rather than a nation, from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Prerequisiti Knowledge of the English language with B1 level as minimum achievement.
