Obiettivi formativi
The educational objective of the course is to introduce the students to the comprehension of the analytical genomic tools and to the mechanisms and machineries of inherited and parasitic diseases. Some host-parasite molecular mechanisms of interaction will also be considered. The course will also illustrate the spontaneous and experimental animal models for the understanding of the genetic and pathogenetic basis of parasitic diseases.

At the end of the course the student will possess:
-knowledge on the principles of the construction of the genetic and physical maps
- knowledge of the main tools available for nucleotide sequencing both Sanger and next generation
-knowledge of the main tools for high-throughput genotyping both by hybridization and sequencing
- basic knowledge of the genomic difference in parasites and mammals
Furthermore the student will be able to
- understand the terminology and the research approaches of molecular genetics and genomics used in science and reported in the scientific publications
- understand which tools might be more appropriate for an analysis aimed to high-throughput nucleotide sequencing and genotyping, together with their pros and cons
- understand which tools might be the most appropriate for an association study for different diseases, and which might be the limits and the power.

Unit H52-79-A: Genomic analysis of inherited diseases
LECTURES:
- Genetic and physical maps of domestic animals (2 hs).
- Genome Wide Sequencing High-throughput systems, DNA and RNA sequencing (4 hs)
- Whole genome amplification, SNP array and Genome Wide Association Studies for genome mapping of inherited diseases (4 hs)
- Genomic variability and host-parasite interaction: Leishmaniosis and Varroatosis (2 hs)

PRACTICALS:
- On-line practice on Genomic databases (3).
- Journal clubs on genome sequencing project in domestic animals, genome mapping (Homozigosity mapping, case / control studies, trios) and gene identification in inherited
diseases and in parasitic diseases, the latter limited to those addressed in the lectures (3).
- Visits to research and service centers equipped with high-throughput platforms (6).

Unit H52-79-B: Molecular pathology of parasitic diseases.
LECTURES:
1. Advanced diagnostic techniques for the study of the molecular mechanisms of parasitic diseases (2 hs)
2. Immunopathology of parasitic diseases and parasitic strategies of immune response evasion: leishmaniosis and filariosis (4 hs)
3. Drug targets of parasites - insights from genome mining and animal models (2 hs)
4. Moonlighting proteins of parasites: physiopathological significance (2 hs)
5. Molecular mechanisms of resistance and sensitivity to animal parasitic diseases: varroatosis, toxoplasmosis and neosporosis (2 hs)

PRACTICALS:
The practical part of the course will teach the student the application of methods described in the lectures and specifically, genetic expression and molecular diagnostic techniques applied to the study of parasitic diseases and related animal models (12 hs)

Lectures and practical sessions (the latter consist in laboratory and computer activities)

Written examination: an open ended text and/or multiple choice questions and the two Units will be held together in the same day.
The evaluation will take into account the quality and the accuracy of the student's answers, including adequate motivation of statements and analyses.
