Nanomaterials: applications and effects
A.A. 2019/2020
Obiettivi formativi
The aim of this course is on one hand to give information on the advantages of the use of nanomateris and their potential application, and on the other hand on the possible adverse effects on environment, humans and animals, through the following topics: nanomaterials in tissue engineering, nanomicrobiology and nanotoxicology
Risultati apprendimento attesi
At the end of the course the students will have:
knowledge on toxicological effects of nomaterials and nanoparticles
knowledge on toxicity testing of nanocompounds
knowledge on new tools for the study of microorganisms at microscopic level
knowledge on applications of Atomic Force Microscopy for the observation of bacterial and viral structures to develop active antimicrobial drugs
a general view of the basic principles of the extracellular environment, the most important materialsused in nanomedicine, the techniques to produce them and the main application fields in veterinary medicine

Prerequisiti
Basic knowledge on microbiology and toxicology
Modalità di verifica dell’apprendimento e criteri di valutazione
The exam consists on an oral interview aimed to evaluate knowledge of the lectures' subjects. The test will be evaluated in thirtieths (minimum grade is 18 and the maximum is 30 "cum laude", with honors). The final score of course is the sum of the scores of the three teaching units. The score will take into account the accuracy and the capacity to motivate the answers, and to explain the concepts with correct terminology.
Module: Nanotoxicology: effects of nanomaterials and nanoparticles
Programma
The risk of nanomaterials and nanoparticles, is related to their chemical and physiochemical properties, i.e. size, shape, solubility, surface charge and surface reactivity.
The course will provide information on possible sources, exposure and toxicological effects of nanomaterials and nanoparticles.
Nanotoxicology: introduction (2 hours)
Toxicological effects of nanomaterials and nanoparticles (4 hours)
Eco-toxicology of nanomaterials (4 hours )
Nanotoxicology in vitro model systems (4 hours )
Case studies in nanotoxicology (4 hours)

Module: Nanomaterials in tissue engineering
Programma
The aim of the module is to convey information about the most modern and common nanomaterials and nanostructures employed in tissue engineering, mainly in veterinary field. Given the ample spread of the arguments, the module will focus on the nanostructures and on some aspects of tissue biology, e.g. bone, cartilage, vascular tissue.
