Obiettivi formativi
- Understanding the basic notions of gender, women's rights, equality and non-discrimination in both constitutional and international human rights law;
- Understanding and learning the existing mechanisms to tackle violence against women by looking at the national and supranational level;
- Learning critical tools to investigate and analyse the case-law of the European Convention of Human Rights on gender-based violence before and after the coming into force of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (so-called Istanbul Convention);
- Understanding the current controversies surrounding violence against women through a legal and constitutional perspective.
Risultati apprendimento attesi
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- understand and critically evaluate issues pertaining to the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of gender;
- understand the notion and features of violence against women, including domestic violence;
- analyse, comment and discuss cases held by national and supranational Courts, highlighting procedural rules and mechanisms tailored to tackle of gender-based violence in court;
- elaborate on the acquired notions through written and oral skills;
- engage in conversations and express personal judgments on the topics at issue.

For the purpose of attendance, students are required to register to class as to evaluate the feasibly of teaching activity in presence.
Attendance will be ensured through on-line courses on Microsoft Teams.

Programma
The course aims at analysing and disclosing the main features of gender-based discriminations and at studying the phenomenon of violence against women, including domestic violence.
The course features an interdisciplinary approach, encompassing non legal discipline and interlacing them with constitutional law and international human rights law.
The course embraces a seminar approach, through frontal lessons and guest lectures, and a legal clinic structure by way of students' in-class presentation on assigned cases.

The course will cover the following topics:

the relationship between gender-based discrimination and violence;
violence against women and human rights;
violence against women and intersectional discriminations;
violence against women and the multicultural dilemma.

Metodi didattici
A closing conference with lecturers and hosted experts will be held at the end of the course.

Study material will be regularly uploaded on the Ariel platform, alongside additional readings and case-law materials.

European transfer system of academic credits: 3 academic credits.
