The European Union is a key actor in shaping the international political economy and the relations between states and markets. It is therefore central to comprehending the interactions between economics and politics.
The primary objectives of this module is to provide a detailed understanding of how the European Union and the main political processes within it operate, to convey this knowledge through the theoretical foundations of political science, and to enable students to develop analytical and theoretical skills that can be transferred directly into a non-academic environment or that provide the foundations for further academic research.
The module will discuss the design of EU treaties, the adoption of policies, their implementation and adjudication. It will cover all major EU institutions and policies. The module will also rely on groups presentations of academic papers and on the writing of essays, in order to facilitate the understanding of the module's substantive topics and of the analytical tools employed in political science.

Risultati apprendimento attesi
By the end of the course, the students will be able to: a) understand the institutional structure of the European Union, b) understand core processes of institutional, input and output politics in the Union, c) interpret this knowledge theoretically and analytically through the main theories in political science, d) assess critically empirical evidence, e) present concisely academic theories and arguments to an audience, f) review and convey academic findings and analyses concisely through essays and presentations, g) develop skills to work in a team, and f) develop positive and normative interpretations of important political questions facing the EU leaders.
The emphasis assigned to the substantive knowledge of EU politics and to analytical tools to interpret it, as well as the development of critical skills and communicative abilities to comprehend and convey key theories and findings, via presentations, essays and exams, will allow students to develop an independent understanding of these phenomena which will be relevant for their future career.

Metodi didattici
Il principale metodo di insegnamento consiste in lezioni frontali, seminari di relatori e presentazioni di articoli da parte degli studenti. Gli studenti saranno organizzati in piccoli gruppi e presenteranno un articolo accademico alla classe.
Materiale di riferimento
Il materiale del corso principale è costituito da a) Hix, Simon e Bjørn Høyland (2022) The Political Union of the European Union, Fourth edition, London: Bloomsbury Publishing; b) slides delle lezioni, c) articoli scientifici obbligatori (assegnati dopo le lezioni), d) articoli scientifici opzionali (assegnati dopo le lezioni).
Modalità di verifica dell’apprendimento e criteri di valutazione
Gli studenti frequentanti sono valutati normalmente tramite una presentazione di gruppo di un articolo scientifico (per un valore di 5 punti su 33 - 30 e lode), un elaborato di gruppo (per un valore di 10 punti su 33) e un esame finale (per un valore di 18 punti su 33). Discuteremo in classe un elenco di argomenti per la presentazione e l'elaborato. L'esame consiste di una prova scritta, normalmente con una parte con circa 11 domande a risposta multipla, che contribuisce 11 punti al voto finale e tre domande aperte da 7 punti ciascuna, per un totale di 33 punti (equivalenti a 30 e lode). Le risposte sbagliate sono penalizzate. Gli studenti non frequentanti devono sostenere un esame finale che copre tutto il materiale didattico più diversi articoli aggiuntivi. La durata di ciascun esame è di un'ora e trenta minuti. Il punteggio è in trentesimi. È possibile utilizzare dizionari, glossari e calcolatrici. Gli esiti della presentazione e del saggio di gruppo vengono comunicati tramite Ariel.
Le presentazioni saranno valutate in base al rispetto dei tempi, la comprensione dell'articolo, la qualità di presentazione, l'interazione con il pubblico e la critica all'articolo. Il saggio (tra 5000 e 7000 parole) viene valutato nella misura in cui offre una rassegna critica della letteratura sull'argomento scelto.
