Obiettivi formativi
The course is a basic subject in the Bachelor degree of Ancient Civilizations for the Contemporary World, and belongs to the historico-religious area. In line with the objectives of the Bachelor degree, the aim of the course is to provide the students with a substantial knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita (2nd century BCE - 1st century CE), undoubtedly the most famous of all Indian scriptures and the center of the great Mahabharata epic. Through a critical reading of the eighteen chapters of the poem, students will learn the fundamental religious and philosophical presuppositions and goals of India's civilization and mainstream Hinduism. In a comparative perspective, the course is thought as a contribution to the dialogue between India and the West by clarifying its historical and hermeneutical conditions.

1.Knowledge and understanding: By the end of the course, students will have acquired the basic tools for the analysis of an Indian religious text (its methods, technical terms, commentarial tradition, etc.) along with the knowledge of the theology of Indian epic and more broadly the key concepts of Indian philosophies and religions.
2.Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: ability to analyze an ancient Indian text by situating it within its historical context; use of proper terminology; ability to gather, select and evaluate contemporary scholarship on the topic.
3.Critical judgement and expression of opiniones: analyzing and discussing the various issues involved with critical acumen; contextualizing the poem's theology within its specific cultural milieu; appreciation of how this text has become a classic of Hinduism and of the shifts in interpretation that have characterized its commentarial tradition over the centuries and up to the present, in India as well as in the West.
4.Communication skills: a clear exposition and communication of the acquired knowledge in both oral and written form.
5.Learning skills: understanding of an ancient Indian text by focussing on its English translations; ability to develop one's own critical interpretation of the text and its essential teachings.

Il corso (40 ore = 6 CFU) offre un'introduzione alle idee-cardine delle religioni e filosofie dell'India attraverso l'esame della Bhagavad Gita, universalmente riconosciuta quale uno dei capolavori letterari e spirituali dell'umanità. Il testo si apre nell'imminenza di una grande battaglia, allorché l'eroe Arjuna - rappresentativo del clan dei Pandava - è sopraffatto dall'angoscia di dover muovere guerra a tanti suoi parenti e amici che vede schierati nel campo avverso dei Kaurava e si rifiuta di combattere. Arjuna si affida allora al suo auriga, il dio Krishna, che attraverso un dialogo serrato gli offre una serie di fondamentali insegnamenti che ne scioglieranno i dubbi. Tali insegnamenti sono al cuore della spiritualità indiana, sia del passato che del presente, e a lezione verranno presi in esame attraverso l'attenta lettura di ampie porzioni del poema in traduzione inglese. Si analizzerà come i settecento versi che lo compongono siano stati interpretati dalla tradizione commentariale hindu, anche prendendo in esame l'iconografia della Bhagavad Gita, e si vedrà come il poema abbia a un certo punto valicato i confini del subcontinente e sia giunto in Occidente, venendo letto e apprezzato da personalità quali Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831), Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) e Julius Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967). Vedremo anche come leader nazionalistici quali il 'Mahatma' Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) e leader religiosi quali lo Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) si siano abbeverati a questo classico della spiritualità indiana e l'abbiano reinterpretato in chiave nazionalistica nella lotta contro il dominio coloniale britannico.

Lezioni frontali. Gli studenti saranno richiesti di preparare delle presentazioni che saranno discusse in classe.

Modalità di verifica dell’apprendimento e criteri di valutazione
Esame orale e preparazione di una tesina su di un argomento concordato. Il voto massimo è 30/30 'cum laude' (voto minimo: 18/30). L'esame verterà su quanto presentato e discusso in classe e sui testi assegnati. Esso ha lo scopo di verificare la conoscenza delle questioni fondamentali affrontate durante le lezioni; di verificare la capacità di situare la Bhagavad Gita nel suo contesto storico e teologico e di render conto degli sviluppi della sua interpretazione attraverso i secoli sino alla sua ricezione in Occidente; di verificare la capacità di presentare in lingua inglese i contenuti del corso in modo chiaro e dettagliato, sviluppando un approccio critico alla materia trattata.
