History and Politics of North Africa and the Middle East

Learning objectives
The course will introduce the students to the history of North Africa and Middle East in the modern and contemporary eras and to some of the key themes surrounding the discussion of religion and politics. The first part will focus on the emergence and development of Islamism and other forms of religious revivalism by looking at the interplay between local contexts and histories , and trans-regional phenomena triggered by neoliberal policies, new communication technologies and migration. The second part of the course will analyze the relationship between Islam and politics across a range of settings: Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Pakistan, Iran.
