Infection Diseases and Zoonosis

Learning objectives
At the beginning, the principles of epidemiology are explained, to give the student the basic instruments for the comprehension of diseases. The course focuses mainly on infectious diseases of farm animals, with particular emphasis on zoonotic ones. Some diseases of pet animals are also addressed. For each disease, the pathogenetic mechanism of aetiological agent is discussed and the diagnostic procedures are detailed.

PROGRAMM
Infectious diseases, zoonoses and food-borne diseases: basic principles
· Mastitis: infection of ruminants with implications for zoonosis and food-borne diseases
· Viral (Rota- and Coronavirus) and bacterial enteritis (colibacillosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis); implications for public health
· Systemic zoonotic infections: mycobacteriosis, brucellosis, chlamydiosis
· S. suis infections in pigs and humans
· Respiratory and reproductive infections of animals (Mycoplasma, Myxovirus, Herpesvirus, Pestivirus)
· Rabies
Practical lessons
(1.5 CFU) Introduction to the methods generally used in the diagnosis of common infectious diseases of animals. Particular attention will be addressed to molecular techniques and to the interpretation of diagnostic results.
