Learning objectives
The course aims to deepen the study of the French language in the Master's Degree Programme. At a theoretical level, the course proposes the diachronic study of French in relation to certain historical moments and the study of today's French observed through oral corpora and through essays and literary texts that will be the subject of written analysis up to the construction of dissertations. At a practical level, the development of reception, production, interaction and mediation is proposed at different levels, corresponding to the CEFR levels B2, B2+, C1, C1+.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of some moments in the history of the French language and understanding of the evolution of the system. Knowledge and understanding of oral and written French in authentic corpora and in various complex textual typologies such as essays and literary writings.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: full B2+/C1 level and higher levels for all linguistic-communicative activities: reception, production, interaction and mediation and development of strategies related to them. Ability to analyse the French language in a diachronic and synchronous perspective.

Course syllabus
The course is entitled Be able to reflect on the oral and written French language and consists of the following three teaching units, which will be teached in parallel:
A (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Writing a dissertation in French [ Prof. Monica Barsi]
B (Mutuation from the History of the French Language) (20 hours, 3 ECTS): The evolution of French from its origins to the 18th century [Prof. Barbara Ferrari]
C (French Linguistic mutation) (20 hours, 3 ECTS): Transcribe the orality [prof. Cristina Brancaglion]
The course provides 9 ECTS. It is not possible to accrue only 6 ECTS.
Unit A: This unit involves writing an essay on a problem that will have to be analyzed according to a pre-established plan for writing the text.
Unit B: This section will illustrate the fundamental periods in the history of French, from its origins to the 18th century. The phonetic, morphosyntactic, lexical and orthographic evolution of the French language will be analyzed by texts from different eras, contextualized from a historical and cultural point of view.
Unit C: During this unit the student will be able to discover the characteristics of the authentic uses of spontaneously spoken French. Through a methodological reflection on the constitution and analysis of the oral corpus, students will learn to make and examine short transcriptions of monologues or conversations with several voices.
The course programme is valid until September 2021. From the 2022 winter session, exclusively the A.A. 2020-21 course programme will be valid.

Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: face-to-face lessons, face-to-face and online activities. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination:
The examination consists of one written test (dissertation) and four oral tests relating to the practical class and the three units of the course, all evaluated in 30ths. The final vote will be unique and will take into account the outcome of all the tests. The written and oral tests may be taken in free succession. The final vote will be evaluated at the end of all the tests at the first useful oral exam.
International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in agreement with the competent office.
