Learning objectives
The aim of the course it to provide the student with several instruments to face the study and the research of some of the aspects of the French culture and economy of the XX and XXI centuries. The course is developed in three areas: the analysis of the historical and cultural period: from the Belle Epoque until now; The main steps concerning the world of work and the economy in France in order to focus our attention on some of the most important current issues. Afterwards, we will focus on the literary and cinematographic representation through the analysis of films and novels.
Expected learning outcomes
During the lessons the student will develop his/her skills through texts and videos in French, as well as his/her communicative abilities throughout the presentation and discussion of written texts and multimedia productions. A critical thinking will be encouraged thanks to discussions, debates and group work.

I. First part
I. History and society in steps: Belle époque, between the two World Wars, "Les Trente glorieuses", From Mitterand to Marcron
II. The French great dates of economical an social history
Analysis of the fiction "La Place" (1983) by Annie Ernaux
III. Problems and achievements of French employment

2.Second part
I. Focus on: history of women's work
II. The end of the working class: from miners to The "Gilet Jaunes"
III. The representation of the working class: analysis of the fiction « Les derniers jours de la classe ouvrière » (2003) by Aurélie Filippetti and of the film « Deux jours une nuit » (2014) by Jean-Pierre et Luc Dardenne.
IV. Changes in the world of work: challenges and opportunities
Prerequisites for admission
French knowledge (bachelor degree). Lessons and exams will be in french language.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be an oral interview based on the topics of the program. It will be judged: the deep knowledge as well as the capacity to use the methodological instrument in order to understand and expose the historical and cultural periods.
A particular interest will be given to fluent and argued expositions in order to integrate socio-political, economical ed historical notions in a transversal way.
