The general objective is to illustrate the fundamental cellular, molecular and tissue principles at the basis of physiological and pathological processes.
Expected learning outcomes
The student should acquire knowledge about the fundamental physiological processes and about their alterations in pathological conditions.

Basic knowledge of cell biology and biochemistry, chemistry and physics. In addition, it is mandatory to have passed the course in Anatomy

The following topics will be covered in this context:
1. Concept of disease: etiology and pathogenesis
2. The damage and the cellular response to the damage
3. Cellular response (necrosis and apoptosis)
4. Systemic response (fever/shock)
5. Acute inflammation (e.g. roiling and margination, chemotaxis, phagocytosis, inflammation mediators, systemic reactions)
6. Chronic inflammation
7. Principles of Immunopathology
8. Tumours (benign and malignant tumours, oncogenes, suppressors, metastases).
