Learning objectives
The Geographical Information Systems are essential tools for spatial planning in more and more professional sectors. In this context, the course aims to provide students with the basic skills to manipulate, analyse, manage, and present spatial and geographic data, both qualitative and quantitative, through GIS (Geographical Information Systems) software.
Expected learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, the student will know: what is a Coordinate Reference Systems; what is a map projection; what is a SIT; the different types of data; GIS analysis and geoprocessing tools; how to build a map layout; what is a WebGIS.
- At the end of the course, the student will be able to: create a map using the QGIS software; use, modify and convert different data formats compatible with GIS; to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial data; create a map layout.

UNIT A - Geographical Information Systems and cartography: introduction to the bases of cartography and GIS.

UNIT B - GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and QGIS software: practical exercises with QGIS software.

UNIT C - Geographical Information Systems today: between WebGIS and participatory cartography: analysis and discussion of concrete examples of Geographical Information Systems and their fields of application.

Assessment methods and Criteria
For the final examination, each student must create two maps using Qgis software and write a report, to be sent by email to the teacher at least ten days before the exam date, in order to ascertain the skills acquired in the use of the software.
An oral examination will follow on the bibliography, in order to ascertain the knowledge on the basis of the discipline
